SHARE A RIDE - BREATHE EASY

If you've seen the banner hanging over Eastern Boulevard or would like to find out how you can make a difference to Cape Town's air quality, read on ...

This campaign was launched after seeing the extent of the smog hanging over Cape Town on still winter days. We are hoping to alert people to the fact that our unsustainable methods of transport are directly linked to the real problems in all of our lives - the unsightly smog and the respiratory problems that result from it. It?’s amazing how different country air smells compared to the air we breathe in the city!

All we would like to give you here are a few very simple transport related things you can do to make our air in Cape Town cleaner.

  • Use public transport

    • The trains in Cape Town have improved a lot and there are security guards on every train and nearly all the stations.
    • If you?’re up for an adventure, catch a minibus taxi. It?’s always good to have stories to tell about your ride to work and regular checks by traffic officials ensure that the majority of taxis are roadworthy and not (too) overcrowded.

  • Cycle

    • Kill two birds with one stone ?– commute and work out at the same time. Imagine all the petrol money and gym fees you?’ll save!

  • Leave the car at work

People often complain that they can?’t ride or catch public transport to work as they need their car at work. The simple solution would be to leave the car at work. This may require a bit of planning as to when you?’ll need your car in the evening or on weekends!

  • Share a ride!

    • If you work in a big office, try and find others who travel to and from the same area as you. Offer to share traveling costs.
    • Start a lift club for your childs school friends ?– it could give you an extra half an hour to yourself before the children get home from school!

These ideas are just a start. Get creative; there are many other ways to reduce your personal environmental impact!
