Earthlife Africa eThekwini attends the First Meeting of the Parties (MOP1) Kuala Lampur, Malaysia, 23 -27 February 2004 Thoko Makhanya from Earthlife Africa eThekwini is currently attending the First Meeting of the Parties (MOP1) to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety, Kuala Lampur, Malaysia, 23 -27 February 2004. Together with Mariam Mayet fromr the African Centre for Biosaftey they form the South African Civil Society representation at this important meeting. Earthlife Africa together with several South African Civil Society groupings have released an open letter to the South African government , raising concerns about the implementation of the GMO Act in South Africa and its compliance with the Biosafety Protocol particularly public particpation as laid out in Article 23 of the protocol. Earthlife Africa has over the last year been monitoring the number of application for permits to import and grow GMO, and have set up a process on our website to publish the applications and comments when brought to our attention as public service. We have also asked the Legal Resource Centre's Durban office to monitor the legalities of such applications and to seek compliance with the National Environmental Management Act over 2003/04 period.
