Have an Environmentally Friendly Festive Season! The festive season is here and everyone heads to the sea or so it seems if you live in Cape Town. Earthlife Africa Cape Town has put together a few tips to enable you to lounge around on the beach or wherever you are on holiday, feeling like you are doing your bit for the environment! A. Do get a real Christmas tree, pine or wattle or any other alien - you will be contributing to alien clearing, preventing veld fires and by doing so, contributing to lessening global warming. B. Decorate your tree with recycled goods - this can be very creative, and you will enjoy showing off your tastefully arranged cigarette butts, can ring pulls, bits of plastic, shards of glass etc. (word of warning - avoid organic matter - it tends to smell and could be offputting to guests as they tuck into traditional Christmas fayre) C. The turkey, sheep, or braai cow parts. Spare a thought for the animals who have selflessly guzzled all sorts of material thrown at them from genetically modified grains, to fishmeal (even though most are vegetarian by choice!), been dosed with toxic chemicals to prevent flies or worms, and have been injected with steroids without even having the chance to prove themselves in a sporting event. So while you cut through their tender oozing flesh, propose a toast to all those less fortunate than you who sacrificed their lives to keep you well fed! D. If you go out in the heat, please do drink lots (alcohol or not is up to you!). By drinking cold drinks, you are reducing your body temperature, thereby contributing to lessening global warming. E. If you own a car, taxi or bus, Don?t drink and drive, don?t talk and drive. In fact driving appears to result in seemingly intelligent people often ending up needlessly dead - so this season, don?t drive! This is one way of finding out if the public transport system is really as bad as they say! And by not driving, you are contributing to lessening global warming. F. Finally a word on presents. Weapons of mass destruction in any guise are a no no. And don?t be fooled by the label. Nuclear reactors are not the answer to global warming. They make a mess which doesn?t come off the carpets for generations, and they are terribly expensive. Buy a windmill instead, they don?t come with a health warning! Please be warned, the views expressed here do not necessarily form part of Earthlife Africa official policy. WE WISH YOU A FUN-FILLED, SUSTAINABLE, HEALTHY 2004 Looking for us click here ?? |
