Update International Rivers Day - Day of Action 14 March 2004 Inanda Dam The Inanda dam falls within the eThekwini Municipality and we have been working with community representatives since 1999, to take their issue of reparations to the World Commission on Dams (WCD). The work has also involved the follow up with the South African Review process of the WCD and the United Nations Environmental Programme Dams and Development Project follow up. This has been done by ensuring that the community representatives are able to present their stories at various gatherings in South Africa, the NGO Hearing for Dam Affected Communities (Cape Town 1999), The release of the WCD report (Pretoria 2000), The first SA Review of the WCD meeting (Midrand 2001), The formation of the South African Water Caucus (Cape Town 2002), The 2nd SA Review of the WCD meeting (Johannesburg 2002), The World Summit on Sustainable Development (Johannesburg 2002). above: Community meetings A major breakthrough occurred in on 25 April 2003 when Earthlife Africa eThekwini facilitated a meeting with the Minister of Water Affairs and Forestry Mr Ronnie Kasrils MP and the Inanda Dam affected communities This gave communities an opportunity to discuss their issues of reparation first hand with the Minister. The outcome of the meeting was that the Minister would take up the issues of the communities and seek other forms of compensation (other than cash). On 7 July 2003 the Minister set up a report back meeting with the communities and it was reported that the eThekwini Municipality would be prioritising the provision of housing development for dam affected communities. The meeting also agreed to set up a multi-stakeholder committee made up of the various government departments, municipal councillors and officials, community representatives and NGOs above: Ntuzuma G Minister leaving Tin House An important part of this meeting was the Minister's visit to Ntuzuma G Tin Town and KwaDinabakubo (eNgcolosi) where he saw first hand the conditions under which the communities are living. The issue of water provision to communities was raised first hand when the Minister met four families who were sharing a standpipe since they were relocated in 1987. Earthlife Africa eThekwini is now in the process of facilitating the establishment of the multi-stakeholder committee.
