Articles on Waste

Earthlife Africa believes that the only sane way to deal with hazardous waste is by reduction at source and the development of alternative methods of production. Any form of mass hazardous waste "disposal" only delays addressing this problem directly.

Incineration Not a Solution

Incineration is one of the technologies that does not fit into the Zero Waste concept and we have been campaigning on against the technology since Earthlife started in 1988.

Currently we have several campaigns against incinerators in South Africa:

Enviroserve a private waste disposal company wants to build a medical waste disposal facility at their Shongweni toxic landfill site in the eThekwini Municipal area. Local residents have taken up the struggle reminiscent of the early Thor struggles up the road in Inchanga (Cato Ridge) of the late 1980's. It is a unique struggle where upmarket property owners in Hillcrest and Assagay together with the local Inkosi (traditional leader) in Sarlam (area next to the toxic dump) have united against the project.

The proposed incinerator project proposes to bring the two old incinerators to Shongewini. One of which was forced to close by community action in the south of Durbanat Eviroserve's WasteTech Facility in Propecton and the other one was never used to burn much waste as it was situated in municipal landfill site close to communities and that there were a number of private waste disposal firms supplying the service making it difficult for the municipality to enter this market.

It is proposed to link these two incinerators to a filtration plant to "filter" out the toxic fumes. The process is now in the final stages of an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). Earthlife Africa eThekwini has requested the Legal Resources Centre in Durban to make representation on our behalf in this process.

The next steps in the process will see the comments made in this round of consultations being submitted for a Record of Descission (ROD) to the Department of Arigricluture and Environment Affairs (DAEA) in KwaZulu Natal. At this point it will be in the hands of the Provincial Government to decide whether or not this project can go ahead.

We will be monitoring the final report to see what the "mitigating factors" are by the consultants of Enviroserve to the DAEA and we will keep the public informed on the next steps which we will take in consultation with the communities around the proposed incinerators and other local NGOs.
